Ghanaians Set to March Against Galamsey: Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah to Lead Protest

Thousands of Ghanaians will today flood the streets, marching from Obra Spot to Jubilee House in a protest being led by media practitioner and activist Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah. The protesters are demanding government action to halt the menace of illegal mining, galamsey.

The protest begins at 2 pm today, during which protesters will chant slogans and carry placards with inscriptions such as “Blood, Gold, Greed.” The #GalamseyMustFall campaign has been building over the last few months as citizens have been expressing their outrage at the environmental and social cost of unbridled mining activities.

Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah, an active campaigner, has emphasized the need for more enforcement of mining laws and greater accountability on the part of the powers that be. The protesters want the government to take decisive action to protect the country’s natural resources and the well-being of affected communities.

The demonstration will surely draw a lot of attention to the issue, and the government will most likely be pushed to respond to the demands.
