In a recent conversation on GhanaWeb TV’s Talkertainment with Elsie Lamar, Ghanaian afro-fusion twins Lali X Lola opened up about the challenges and benefits of standing out with their signature red hair. The twins, known for their energetic performances and catchy tunes, revealed that their bold choice has led to stereotyping and misunderstandings.
“They see the red hair and immediately assume things about us,” the twins explained, sharing a disturbing encounter with the police. “We were stopped, taken out of our car, and thoroughly searched – our bags, everywhere. We still don’t know what they were looking for.”
Despite the negative experiences, Lali X Lola emphasized the importance of their unique look. “Red is a vibrant color, one you never tire of. We wanted something that would make us instantly recognizable. When people see two red-haired individuals, they know it’s us. Even on stage, without a screen, it’s clear – Lali and Lola are here.”
The twins view their distinctive appearance as a powerful branding tool, drawing parallels with big brands like Telecel, which use red as their official color. “It’s memorable. It works for them, just as it does for us,” they added.
Lali X Lola’s story highlights the complexities of identity and perception. While their red hair has led to stereotyping, it has also become an integral part of their brand, setting them apart in the music industry. As they continue to make waves with their afro-fusion sound, the twins remain unapologetic about their bold choice, embracing the attention and recognition that comes with being true to themselves.
Their message is clear: don’t judge a book by its cover, or in this case, a person by their hair color.
