President of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama joined thousands of Ghanaian workers on Thursday, May 1, 2025, at the Black Star Square in Accra to commemorate this year’s May Day celebration. The event, organized by the Trades Union Congress (TUC), was held under the theme, “Resetting Pay and Working Conditions in Ghana: The Role of Stakeholders.”
In a spirited address to a packed durbar of workers from both the public and private sectors, President Mahama emphasized the need for a fairer and more sustainable system of compensation for workers across the country. He called on stakeholders to collaborate in improving wages, working environments, and job security, stressing that economic recovery and national development are not possible without a well-motivated workforce.
The occasion saw various organizations participate in a colorful march past, showcasing unity, discipline, and the strength of Ghana’s labor force. Many companies also took the opportunity to display their products and services, while workers held placards highlighting issues such as low wages, poor working conditions, and the rising cost of living.
Also present at the event were the Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah; Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, Dr Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo; and National Democratic Congress (NDC) National Chairman, Johnson Asiedu Nketiah. Their presence signaled political support and recognition of the vital role labor plays in national development.
