In the early hours of Saturday (today), July 26, 2025, the music world stood still as news broke of the passing of one of Ghana’s most revered and beloved musical icons, Charles Kojo Fosu, widely known by his stage name, Daddy Lumba. The somber announcement was made public by his family through an official statement, released by their legal counsel, Fati Ali Yallah of Baba Jamal & Associates.
Daddy Lumba, aged 60, died peacefully after a brief illness, surrounded by his close family. Though the illness was not disclosed, the brevity of the announcement reflected the family’s deep grief and request for privacy as they navigated this profound loss.
Born Charles Kojo Fosu, Daddy Lumba’s career spanned decades and left an indelible mark not only on Ghanaian highlife music but also on the cultural identity of the nation. With over 30 albums to his name and a signature sound that blended traditional highlife with contemporary influences, his music transcended generations. Whether it was the joy of love, the heartbreak of betrayal, or the struggles of everyday life, Daddy Lumba’s voice provided the soundtrack to it all.
His lyrics were poetry, romantic and sometimes playful, sometimes deeply philosophical but always relatable. Songs like Aben Wo Ha, Yentie Obiaa, and Theresa became anthems, deeply woven into the fabric of Ghanaian life. His stage presence was magnetic, his charisma unmatched, and his dedication to the craft unwavering.
The statement from the Fosu family read in part:
“Daddy Lumba was more than a musician; he was a cultural icon whose music touched countless lives. His soulful voice provided the soundtrack to our love stories, and his poignant lyrics captured the poetry of our struggles, dreams, and resilience.”
Tributes have since poured in from across the globe, fans, fellow musicians, political figures, and cultural leaders, all echoing a shared sentiment: Ghana has lost a giant.
The radio station D106.9 FM, known as the “Home of Legends,” joined in mourning the icon, honoring his legacy with a day-long tribute featuring his greatest hits and heartfelt messages from fans.
As the nation grieves, plans for Daddy Lumba’s funeral are underway, with the family promising to share details in the coming days. One thing is certain: his farewell will not be a quiet one. It will be a celebration of life, music, and a legacy that will never fade.
For now, Ghana bows its head in reverence.
Rest well, legend. Your music lives on.
