Ocean Acidification – The Effects of Climate Change on the Ocean and Marine Life 

The ocean is a vital part of our environment. It shapes our climate and supports the richest variety of life on Earth. It also provides us with food, medicine, jobs, and enjoyment.

However, due to human activities such as burning fossil fuels and releasing greenhouse gases, our oceans are changing. Fish are moving away from their usual waters as temperatures rise, and some species are disappearing. Coral reefs, which protect marine life, are dying due to ocean acidification. Even the shells of oysters and clams are dissolving. Plankton, which produce about half of the world’s oxygen, are also being affected. This problem goes beyond the sea, it affects life on land as well.

Here in Ghana, approximately 5–10% of our GDP comes from the sea. If we continue to damage it, our economy and our future will suffer greatly.

This is why I urge every Ghanaian to PROTECT OUR FISH TO PROTECT OUR TOMORROW.

The fish that feed our families are dying because of our actions. If we remain silent, we risk losing them forever. We must take action now.

Here are a few steps we can take:
Support sustainable fishing. Buy from responsible local fishermen.

Reduce plastic waste. Every sachet or bottle we throw away can end up killing a fish.

Empower coastal communities. Support education and better care for our waters.

Demand strong enforcement. Insist that laws protecting our sea are followed.

Our fish are not just food; they are part of who we are.

Let’s protect them today so our children and grandchildren can still cast their nets and find life in the sea.
